Pre-requisite to attend class
If you can edit a word document, you can participate in this class. This is not a ‘coding class’, it is a web developer class, where we will show you how to use a tool that already exists and work with code that has already been built. We may show some basic HTML / CSS but this is not a coding class.
Items needed for class
We recommend that you print out the .pdf learning document for each part ahead of time. This document will show you the screenshots, and we refer to this document as we walk you through the material. If you have 2 computer screens, that is a plus, but it is not required. You will want to have a laptop, or a desktop, where you have full-screen access. This is where you will do all of your work.
Do I need an email address?
Yes, you need your own email address. One that you can receive emails from during the class, and in between the class. We will be emailing you details, handouts, etc. In addition, we will want a parent/caregiver email this way any communication we have with the student is also with the parent.
Will I build my own website?
Yes, you will build a website that you will have access to for 30 days. The website ‘topic’ will be barbershop or hair salon. After the class is complete, you can adjust the website any way that you want. As long as you continue to visit the website, you will have access to it for free even after the 30 days. If you stop visiting it and working on it, you will lose the site.
As a note, you can always build your own website using the same hosting company either during the class or after the class is complete.
Is Joomla! Really free?
YES! Joomla is 100%. It was created by volunteers and maintained by volunteers.
So why do I have to pay for hosting?
For this class you will NOT have to pay for hosting it is also 100% free. However, if you want to build a website in the future, you will need to pay for hosting through a hosting company. The prices could range from $5/month and up, it depends on what you are looking for with a hosting provider.
What if I need assistance after the class?
We can direct you to various free videos after the class is complete. We can also direct you to many different user groups that you can participate in where you can meet other individuals that could assist you with your website. The instructors could possibly work with you in the future, but that would have to be worked out with your parents.
Will I know enough to build a site for a client?
Yes! The first site that you build for a client will always be tricky, but we will give you enough knowledge about where you can get started. Yes, that means you could charge someone for your services! Although we recommend the first website that you build, you lower the rate, because it may take you extra time to figure things out.
What images will we use on the site?
We will provide you with a zip file of free images that you can use. We can get them from https://pixabay.com/ which gives you access to free images. You should never just ‘grab’ images or content from google without getting the image owners' authority to use it, especially on a client’s website.
How do I get started?
We work directly with Recreation Departments, Public Libraries, School systems. This way we can provide classes for the specific age group that they are looking for. If you think this could be great for your town, please have your department contacts reach out to us!
Will there be homework?
We may assign some work for students to do outside of the class time, depending on how long it takes to get through the material. Our goal is to have minimal work that has to be done outside of class time.
Are there ‘helpers’?
Yes, we will have helpers/mentors teaching along with the main instructor. We will have a 1:7 student to staff ratio. During the class, we plan on having break-out sessions, so the students will be able to work directly with the instructor. The break out sessions will depend on our speed at getting through the material.
How much does the class cost?
Currently, we are offering this class for free to local municipalities in the United States. Our goal is to get the word out about Joomla! By educating kids/teens how to build websites in a very efficient website building system... so jump in and have fun!
